The jelly bra went from a curiosity to the fastest-growing shape in intimates in about eighteen months. Every brand in the category is now selling you the same sentence: a soft, flexible strip that does the work an underwire used to do.

That sentence is true of all of them. What none of the advertising tells you is where that support actually sits inside the garment — and after four weeks of wearing them, that turned out to be the only thing that separated the six.

We bought all six at full retail, put them on twelve testers, and wore them for 28 consecutive days under ordinary clothes. We measured cup projection on day one and again on day 28. We logged pressure marks, strap slip and side spill. Then we cut two of them open.

The result surprised us twice. The £53 bra — by far the priciest, and the one with the best-made garment of the group — finished fourth. And the winner cost £29.95.

The Method

How we tested

Every bra was bought at retail, worn a minimum of six full days by each tester, laundered on the same cycle, and scored blind against five criteria. No brand was told it was being tested.

This is the one we cut open first, because the numbers made no sense next to the price. In every other bra we opened, the support element is bonded into the cup and the band — a horseshoe sitting roughly where an underwire would. Celeste D'or's runs in a continuous W-shape through the cup and then out into the side panel, into territory a standard wire never reaches.

The difference is obvious the second you put a fitted top over it. The others smooth the front and stop. This one keeps going under the arm, which is where side spill actually happens, and it was the only bra in the test that did anything there at all.

The most established name in the group and the easiest to recommend on fit alone. The size run is the widest of any major brand here — S through 4XL, supporting up to a G cup — and it was the only bra our larger-bust testers said they intended to keep wearing after the test ended.

The comfort scores are genuinely high. The diamond neckline gives proper coverage without spillage at the top edge, the fabric is soft and light, and nobody reported a mark at removal. If your problem with bras is that nothing fits, this is where to start.

Where it gives up ground is placement. Shapermint's own description is precise about it: the strips are bonded into the band and cup. The side panel is plain fabric, so nothing is happening at the underarm, and it showed under fitted knits. By week three the projection had also softened noticeably from where it began.

The best-priced bra in the test that still does a real job. At £22.99 it undercuts everything else here, the size run reaches 4XL, and the wide band is the flattest-sitting of the six — no roll, no dig, nothing to adjust through the day.

It's also the most honest about what it is. Truekind builds a shaper: the smoothing comes from firm, even compression across the whole garment rather than from a support element doing the lifting. That works, and for a lot of people it's exactly the right trade.

But compression flattens as much as it holds, and it relaxes. This had the second-largest drop in projection across the test, most of it arriving after week two. Worth noting on price too — the struck-through £34 has been there every time we've checked. Treat £22.99 as the price, not a deal.

Judged purely as a piece of clothing, this is the best thing in the test. The seams are clean, the fabric recovers properly after washing, and the straps genuinely did not slip once in 28 days — the only bra here we can say that about. Honeylove has spent years on this and it shows.

The crossover front is doing real work too. It holds everything in place through movement better than any of the pullover styles, and testers who'd struggled with gaping at the top edge on other bras had no complaints here.

The problem is arithmetic. It's £53 — 77% more than the bra that beat it — and for that money it still does nothing at the side panel, so it lost the same points at the underarm that most of this group lost. It's an excellent bra at a price that assumes it's the only one you're considering.

The best smoothing result in the test, and it isn't close. The side wings are the widest of the six and they extend far enough back to deal with the bra-line bulge that most of this category ignores entirely. Under a fitted white tee, this one disappeared.

The colour range deserves credit too — four skin-toned options rather than the usual black-and-beige, which is the difference between invisible and nearly invisible on a lot of people.

What it doesn't do is lift. Smoothing and lifting are different jobs, and this garment is built almost entirely for the first one: projection on day one was among the lowest here, and there wasn't much change by day 28 because there wasn't much to lose. Sizing also runs small enough that most of our testers went up one.

Last place here isn't an insult — it's a category problem. This is a beautifully light, cooling everyday bra, and on a hot day it was the one testers reached for. The Air Sense fabric does what it claims; nobody was warm in it, which is more than we can say for two of the bras above it.

It's also the cheapest thing in the test at £18.99, and the size run starts at XS, which matters if most of this category starts at S and swims on you.

But the padding is light and there is very little structure underneath it, so it finished bottom on both lift and shape retention. Buy it as a comfortable everyday layer and it's good value. Buy it expecting the lift a jelly bra promises and you'll be disappointed. Note also that the site and customer support are German-language, which is friction if something goes wrong.

Why the side panel decided this

Underwire works. That's the uncomfortable truth behind this entire category. A rigid metal frame really does lift and shape — it just does it by concentrating the weight of your bust into a thin hard line pressed against soft tissue for ten hours a day. That's why it leaves a mark, and why it eventually pokes through.

The first wave of wireless bras solved that by removing the wire and putting nothing back, swapping structure for foam. Foam looks right on the hanger and holds for about four hours, after which it compresses and you're wearing a soft cup with no shape in it.

The flexible jelly strip is the third answer and it's a good one: it yields under pressure and springs back instead of crushing flat, giving you the effect of a frame with no rigid part in the garment at all.

The half-measure isn't the jelly. It's where brands stop putting it.

Almost everything in this category treats the strip as a straight swap for the wire — same horseshoe, same position, just softer. That fixes the digging, but it inherits the wire's real limitation: an underwire only ever supported the front and underside of the bust. It never did anything about the side and the underarm, which is where most people's actual complaint about a bra lives.

Extending that structure out into the side panel is the only thing in this test that changed it, and exactly one bra in six does it.

What to look for

Structure that continues into the side panel. Ask where it sits, not whether it's there. "Band and cup" means the sides are plain fabric.
One continuous run, not segments. A single W-shape spreads load evenly. Separate pads under each cup concentrate it straight back at the seam.
Wide, non-slip straps and a smooth back. Thin straps undo the point of losing the wire — they just relocate the pressure to your shoulders.
A free size exchange. Wireless sizing doesn't map cleanly onto your wired size. A brand that charges you to swap is betting you won't bother.

What to avoid

Foam doing the real work. If the cup is thick and moulded, the structure underneath is decoration. Foam is what collapses by 3pm.
Copy that won't describe the structure. Vague wording usually means a thin insert. Brands that engineered something tell you exactly what shape it is.
Permanent strike-through pricing. A "was" figure that never changes isn't a discount, it's a design element.
Heavy compression fabric. It holds shape by squeezing. That's shapewear, and it wears very differently across a full day.
Judging by the day-one photograph. Everything in this category looks good new. Ours only separated at week four.

We went in expecting this to come down to fabric quality or price. It didn't. It came down to one manufacturing decision that five of the six brands didn't make.
